Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone therapy prepared to the dose and form your provider prescribes.

What is bio-identical hormone replacement therapy?

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) uses hormones that have the same chemical structure as the hormones the human body produces on its own. As we age, or because of certain medical conditions, hormone levels can change, and many patients and their providers look at replacement therapy as one way to address the symptoms that follow.

When a prescriber orders BHRT, we can compound it, which means a pharmacist prepares it for that individual patient rather than dispensing a one-size-fits-all product.

What a treatment plan may aim for

Every plan is set by your prescriber based on your symptoms, history, and lab work. Common goals include:

  • Easing the symptoms that brought you to your provider
  • Bringing your hormone levels back toward a healthy balance
  • Helping you feel like yourself again, with ongoing monitoring and adjustment

A plan built around you

No two patients need exactly the same thing. Strength, hormone combination, and the way the medication is taken can all be tailored to the prescription your provider writes. If your needs change, or you are not tolerating a particular form, your prescriber can update the order and we can prepare the new version.

How we compound it

Depending on your prescription, your hormone therapy can be prepared as:

  • Capsules in custom strengths
  • Sublingual troches and lozenges that dissolve under or against the tongue
  • Creams and gels applied to the skin
  • Suppositories and other alternate routes when prescribed
  • Allergen-free, dye-free, or preservative-free bases when needed

Part of your care team

Our pharmacists work alongside you and your prescriber. Call us with questions about your preparation, how to use it, or what to bring up at your next appointment, and we will help coordinate with your provider's office.

A valid prescription from a licensed provider is required. Compounded medications are prepared for an individual patient and are not FDA-approved. Your prescriber decides whether hormone therapy is appropriate for you.
